Police Arrest University Student With Ksh 1.2M Heroin

A 26-year-old student at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) was taken into custody by Mombasa-based anti-drug officials on Wednesday after it was discovered that he was in possession of 300 grams of heroin.Acting on an intelligence report, law enforcement officials detained the student at his Mshomoroni house in Kisauni, according to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The drugs, which had a Ksh1.2 million street value, were discovered by the cops during the operation packaged in a clear polythene bag. A test on the material revealed that it contained heroin.Part of the DCI’s statement said, “The exhibit was secured pending further sampling at the government chemist, as the suspect awaits arraignment today.”

In a separate operation on Wednesday, investigators detained a main suspect and four accomplices in Kamulu, Nairobi County, along Kangundo Road. They were discovered to be in possession of 15 kg of dry plant material, which was thought to be cannabis sativa.”The suspect, with his three accomplices who had no identification documents, was arrested and escorted to Kasarani Police Station and placed in custody,” according to the DCI at the time.

DCI informed that the exhibit had been taken while the four were being arraigned in court. The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has released data for the year 2022, and it indicates that the average age group where heroin and cocaine are first used is 16 to 20 years old.

After cannabis, heroin was the second most commonly used narcotic drug, according to a June 2021 NACADA report.Even while the survey noted that historically, the Coast region and Nairobi were the heroin hotspots, the number of young people abusing the substance was gradually rising in other counties.

“Emerging evidence also shows that the abuse of heroin has penetrated to other non-traditional counties like Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu, Isiolo and Kiambu,” said the report.”Therefore, there was need for enforcement agencies to adopt new narcotic drug control approaches to respond to these emerging challenges including continuous monitoring of new upcoming markets for heroin,” NACADA stated.
