Raila now calls for Judiciary purge
Leader of the ODM Raila Odinga has demanded the creation of an impartial task force or commission to address graft in the judiciary. The leader of the opposition was unequivocal in stating that the country’s judicial system’s vice cannot be handled impartially by the Executive, Legislature, or Judiciary.Raila remarked that the nation shouldn’t make the same mistakes as it did with the drastic surgery conducted by Aron Ringera in 2003 and Shard Rao, whose goal was to remove dishonest judges but whose efforts were in vain.
Kenyans are not unfamiliar with the news of the judiciary purge. He claimed that the purpose of the last two purges was to intimidate and use blackmail to coerce the judges into complying.A number of judges and magistrates found unfit to serve in public office were sent home by Sharad Rao’s Judge and Magistrate Vetting Board and the radical surgery performed by Ringera in 2011.”The Judiciary itself, the Legislature, or the Executive cannot implement reforms within the Judiciary; a natural institution or commission must,” stated Raila.
The ODM leader, who addressed the party’s delegates in Kilifi on Wednesday, also castigated Senate and National Assembly Speakers, saying they had turned into the president’s cheerleaders. He said it was the first since independence that the two Speakers of Parliament have been summoned to State House to witness the signing of Bills into law by the President.
“We have the situation where the Legislature is now captive. Members of Parliament are passing all Bills prepared by the Executive within two hours in Parliament without debate,” he said. The opposition leader recounted in the old days Bills were debated by MPs before the Speakers wrote to the Attorney General for drafting and editing then taken to the president to assent to them.
“This regime’s treatment of the judiciary and legislature is an insult to our democracy. He declared, “Everyone who has devised this plan will be vanquished.”Raila took issue with the gathering at State House in Nairobi that included President William Ruto, Chief Justice Martha Koome, and Speakers of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula and the Senate Amason Kingi. He asserted that it was obvious that their meeting was intended to instill fear in the judges so they would decide in favor of the government in instances involving programs that Kenyans disliked.
Ruto has, however, defended the meeting with Justice Koome, saying it was meant to rally the entire government to a united front in the fight against corruption, and state capture. The president said that it was important for the three arms of government to join hands to deal with the cartels and incompetent public officials who have colluded to steal from Kenyans.
On Tuesday, Wetang’ula also criticized those opposed to the State House meeting terming them the “cynics making hypocritical statements.” He said the meeting was the Arms of Government Summit.”The cynics marking hypocritical statements against the Arms of Government Summit of 22/1/24 are ignorant of the philosophy of the state. The three are Arms of the same Government and will meet, unapologetically,” posted the National Assembly Speaker on his X handle.
At the same time, Raila, who is leading the ODM membership recruitment drive at the Coast, also warned against early campaigns, saying they were threatening the unity of the party and Azimo. He said in mature democracies like the United States, presidential aspirants start their campaigns five months before an election.
“The US has November elections, and the campaigns began three months ago. Let individuals elected to office serve the interests of the people first; early campaigns are discouraged in ODM counties, stated Raila. Governors Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa), Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi), and Wycliffe Oparanya, the deputy head of the ODM party, were among the leaders who joined Raila. Nassir issued a warning, pointing out that there were already indications that their rivals were infiltrating ODM and creating divides. “As I’ve mentioned, it’s evident that some individuals are simply waiting for the right moment to abandon ship. Nassir declared, “We have to enlist more people and get ready to beat them in 2027. Before traveling to Taita Tavata on Friday, Raila will explore Kwale on Thursday. On Saturday, he will wrap up his Coast tour in Mombasa.
