Machogu warns principals against hiking school fees

Secondary school parents won’t face additional fees, according to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.Principals were cautioned by Machogu not to impose any unlawful fees in addition to the suggested amounts.”I would like to announce that in 2024, the boarding expenses assessed in public secondary schools will not change. According to correct enrollment information provided by principals via the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS), schools will continue to receive funding, the speaker stated.

“Parents are having challenges now and we don’t want to subject them to more suffering. The government provides Sh22,450 for tuition and boarding schools will only charge something small for students’ upkeep,” he added.

The CS was speaking at Karen Leadership Centre, Nairobi, on Wednesday, during the 2024 KCB Scholars flag-off.Machogu said parents are undergoing economic hardship and it will not be prudent to raise fees.

He said that over 70% of the kids who took the 2023 KCPE examinations have enrolled in secondary schools around the nation, and the remaining students will be swept out by the government to guarantee a 100% transfer.

The continuing effort has impressed the Ministry thus far, since over 70% of those assigned to secondary schools have already turned in their reports. “We will do everything in our power to guarantee that each of the 1,400,329 KCPE 2023 candidates has enrolled in the schools to which they were assigned,” Machogu stated.According to the CS, the government has granted 9,000 Elimu Scholarships in all 47 counties to underprivileged and vulnerable students who received 280 or higher in the 2023 KCPE exams, in addition to scholarships through the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation and Equity Group Foundation.

“For affirmative action, candidates with special needs and disabilities who attained below 280 marks were eligible. Learners from vulnerable and marginalised groups with 250 marks and above were also eligible,” he said.

Paul Russo, CEO of KCB Group, stated that they will provide tens of thousands of young people with the chance to not just dream but also realize these aspirations.Since education is so important in determining one’s future and chances for success, it is one of our core tenets. In line with SDG number 4, we aim to increase access to inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education,” he stated.

He further said, that through the programme, more youths will access resources, training, and the networks required to become the next generation of leaders.”KCB strategically invests in the education sector as a catalyst towards youth empowerment and securing a better future for this country. Our commitment lies in nurturing talent, fostering ambition, and contributing to the dreams of the Youth,” he said.
