Over 45 people arrested in Shisha dens
Following a Saturday night raid by special officers from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), more than 45 people were found smoking shisha in various locations in Nyali, Mombasa County.
At the Hide Out and Escape shisha shops, where over 50 shisha pots and over ten boxes with unique shisha flavors were seized, the 45 people were taken into custody.
Police also recovered shisha pots and ingredients used to make the drug among other items from the houses, which were seized as evidence.
According to NACADA CEO Anthony Amerikwa, the organization would step up similar operations around the nation in an effort to free several youth who have experimented with shisha addiction.
NACADA intensified the crackdown on December 2023, vowing to weed out the vice in the nation.
Shisha smoking has been outlawed in Kenya since 2017 after the State banned the use, import, manufacture, distribution and promotion of the tobacco product.
Several journalists were hurt during a raid at a Nairobi nightclub last week. Club administrators were detained by police for overseeing the public sale of shisha. In addition to the journalists, the club bouncers who seemed to be resisting arrest also attacked police officers.
Nonetheless, NACADA has emphasized its determination to eradicate the narcotic from the nation.
