Parents Storm Into A School & Burn Down School Property

On Tuesday, January 9, Mawingu Primary School in Nyandarua County’s Ol-Kalou Constituency suspended classes. This came about as a result of protesting parents and children setting a fence that the school had erected during the two-month break on fire.

The parents who were protesting said that a few local acquaintances were using the fence’s construction as a cover to seize the land. One of the parents who was protesting told the media, “We came to witness how this person fenced the school even after we went for public participation at Mawingu Hospital on the issue.”

The parents complained that three days after the public participation, the alleged land grabber demarcated the school property. Upon interrogation, he claimed that he had been granted ownership of the land by a commissioner at Ardhi House.

“We are waiting for the second participation over the matter and we shall not accept that someone comes out of nowhere and fences the land,” the parents pledged. The demonstrations occurred on the first day of classes being back in session for the first semester, which prevented any instruction from beginning.

If the school administration was involved with the school property’s fencing, it was not disclosed. Furthermore, the individual responsible for the fence’s installation remained silent when asked if he would take the case to court.

This occurred a few days after locals in Athi River’s Mavoko neighborhood staged a protest of a similar nature, alleging that a well-connected person had plotted to seize school property nearby. The incensed locals went to the Joska Police Station in Mavoko and said that a senior investigator working in the region had teamed up with a businessman to steal the land.
