A group of lawmakers connected to the Azimio la Umoja Alliance and nominated senator Gloria Orwoba battled on Tuesday over allegations that President William Ruto was involved in the contentious detention of the Controller of Budget, Margaret Nyakango. The outspoken lawmaker blamed his allies for Ruto’s actions instead of denying the accusations that he was a part of the witch hunt.
“Whatever is taking place is not the president’s fault, and whenever something is being planned by individuals who believe they have influence over our party leader, you’ll observe that they always wait for him to depart the nation. We’ve witnessed it,” Orwoba said.
“Today, I would like to speak with authority as a senator from Kenya Kwanza, specifically elected by my party led by His Excellency William Ruto. I shall keep telling the Gusii Community what I have told my colleagues here.
Specifically, Kitutu Chache MP Antoney Kibagendi chastised the senator for her divisive comments endorsing the president, claiming that President Ruto was the driving force behind the arrests.”The President cannot be defended by you. The President has been criticizing our community and is involved. The two got into a furious argument as Kibagendi said, “He knows we cannot allow that.”
The opposition legislator was forced to leave Orwoba to carry out his press conference by other MPs intervening. But after the arrest, Orwoba forced the President to step in, pointing out that the Gusii community was being targeted by those in positions of authority.
“To be honest, the President has nothing to do with this. Orwoba stated, “I’m here because I’m upset about the removal of a female leader, but I also think the President cares about the Gusii community.””We urge him to come forward and stop this because our community is being targeted.”
Margaret Nyakango and eleven other individuals were taken into custody by police officials affiliated with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday. After being captured in Mombasa, Nyakango was charged with four crimes at her arraignment: conspiracy to deceive, operating a Sacco without a permit, forgery, and uttering a fake document. She was released on a Ksh500,000 cash bond after entering a not guilty plea to the allegations.
Raila Odinga, the head of Azimio, responded to the arrest by stating that Nyakango was the victim of a plot that was politically motivated. In order to secure justice, the former prime minister and leader of the opposition promised to back the Controller of Budget.
“We in Azimio were not shocked by Margaret Nyakang’o’s detention as Controller of Budget. On Tuesday, December 5, Raila bemoaned, “It was just a matter of when, not if, she was going to be removed from office on baseless and fabricate accusations to make way for an amiable officeholder who would encourage and disinfect the ongoing looting.”
