Kenya’s Communication Authority Lowers Phone Call Fees
The decrease in call prices has been announced by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA).
The Authority said on Friday that the call fee would decrease from Ksh0.58 per minute to Ksh0.41 per minute.
The new maximum charge rate will be applicable to all cell networks. According to CA, the drop was brought on by the difficult economic conditions that many Kenyans are experiencing as they try to make ends meet.
“The characteristics of the ICT market, the current economic climate, and the need to strike a balance between encouraging investment and safeguarding consumers have all influenced the new rate.
Customers will pay less for calls when there are reduced Mobile Termination Rates (MTRS) and Fixed Termination Rates (FTRS).”Both consumers and operators will benefit from this judgment.
Part of the statement said, “Consumers will now have greater access to a range of reasonably priced services across networks, and operators will have more pricing flexibility in creating more affordable products.”
The new tariffs will go into effect on March 1, 2024, and they will be reviewed after two years. They will only be applicable to calls placed within Kenya, though. However, the existing SMS termination charge of Ksh0.05 per SMS has not altered.
“Ahead of the new rates taking effect, all operators are required to vary their Interconnection Agreements in line with the Determination and file their Deeds of Variation with the Authority latest February 1, 2024,” the regulator stated.
As per the order, several telecom firms are going to release their new call rates. Given that Ksh0.41 is the maximum rate per minute, some of the companies might choose to charge less.
