During a livestock rustling operation, security forces shot and killed a senior three student at Arengesiep Secondary School in the northern Ugandan region of Nabilatuk. Within the Nagule-Angolo hamlet, Ngoloriet sub-county, Napak district, 20-year-old Idoo Lokwakori was shot and killed. According to reports, the deceased was marching with 13 other fighters who each had four guns.
According to Michael Longole, the spokesperson for the Mt. Moroto regional police, the deceased was rendered inoperable at approximately 1:00 am on Thursday morning during a confrontation between armed warriors and the patrolling forces. According to Longole, the student was killed while attempting to steal cows from the livestock Kraal in Nagule-Angolo hamlet, which is close to the village next door where a teacher was killed by suspected warriors that same evening.
According to Longole, the deceased’s body was brought by security to his residence and given to the family so they could bury him in Nabilatuk. He saw that students were working with livestock raiders to steal animals, which they would then sell for “pocket money.” “Our forces will not spare you whether you are a student or not, provided they have caught you in a criminal act,” Longole declared. In order to better their chances for the future, he advised the students to give up their vice and concentrate on their studies instead.
An elder on the Kangole town council named Jonathan Angella attributed the region’s persistent cattle thefts on hunger. He pointed out that because the young people are idle, they have enough of time to consider committing crimes in order to survive.
Angella pointed out that nothing has happened to fulfill the government’s promise to help the young people who turned in their guns, leaving them feeling deceived. In order to prevent the reformed warriors from being lured to return to cattle rustling, he pleaded with the government to take into consideration keeping its promise to support them.
“These boys have started again their evil acts, and the situation this time will be worse because there is no food and the only way to survive is through raiding cows to sell,” stated
It has been noted by Julius Etorom Lote, a resident of Naiwoikorot village in Ngoloriet sub county, that students had been slain in livestock raids before. “You also know the poverty in Karamoja, so these students are lured into cattle theft because they know that after they can sell the stolen livestock and get pocket money,” Lote continued.
He pleaded with the authorities to put the young people in skill-building programs so they can work with their hands and earn money instead of robbing livestock.
