Gov Fubara impeachment process begins
The process of Siminalayi Fubara’s impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly started on Monday morning. As a result, the Assembly has instructed the House Clerk to deliver the impeachment notification to Governor Fubara.
According to reports, the Assembly impeached Hon. Edison Ehie, the majority leader of the House, early on Monday morning, ostensibly to set the stage for the governor’s impeachment.
On Monday, Governor Fubara also stormed the Assembly premises and spoke to his supporters, claiming he had done nothing that would lead to his impeachment. According to reports, the governor’s strained connection with his political godfather, Nyesom Wike, the immediate past governor of the state and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is the cause of the political unrest that is reportedly brewing in Garden City State.
Almost simultaneously with the governor’s visit to the Assembly building, a group of 23 House members convened to impeach the House Leader, Hon. Edison Ehie, under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule. The deputy speaker of the 9th House of Assembly, Ehie, was accused of being plotted to be removed in order to set the stage for the governor’s impeachment.
Speaking to his supporters in front of the House of Assembly building, the majority of whom are Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) members, Governor Fubara claimed he had not done anything wrong to merit the MPs’ impeachment. Speaking to his supporters, the governor declared, “Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment.”
The state’s governor promised to address the situation at the appropriate moment and reassured the populace that they would reap the benefits of democracy.”Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you receive the dividends of democracy,” the governor declared. I will speak to the media at the proper moment.
