Flooding Alert for 16 Counties
16 counties have received a warning from the Kenya Meteorological Department regarding anticipated high rainfall that could result in floods in the area. A number of counties, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Embu, Nyeri, and Kiambu, have experienced flooding.
The others are Mombasa, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Mombasa, Laikipia, Murang’a, Meru, and Nyandarua. Kenya Met said in an advisory released by the department on Thursday that the aforementioned areas would have significant rainfall starting on Friday and continuing through Saturday. It is anticipated to extend to several regions in the Northeast, the Central Highlands, and the South Coast starting on Saturday, October 28. The Met report stated, “Gully winds are likely to accompany these rains.”
Residents in the counties are urged to be vigilant for probable flooding and property destruction, according to the government. According to the warning, “the strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees, and cause structural damages. Where there hasn’t been much rain, floodwaters may appear, especially downstream.”
In order to prevent getting swept away by the floods, the Met also encouraged Kenyans to refrain from driving through, strolling in rushing water, or even driving over wide fields. In order to reduce their vulnerability to lightning strikes, Kenyans were also advised not to seek cover from the rain behind trees or close to grilled windows.
The department announced earlier this week that the nation would continue to see heavy rainfall as previously indicated. The department said in a Monday update that rain would persist over a number of the nation’s regions, with isolated storms possibly occurring in northeastern Kenya and the Highlands east of the Rift Valley. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) recently sent counties guidance on how to get ready for El Nino rains, which coincides with the meteorological department’s warning.
