An officer from the Loruk police station in Baringo County was taken into custody on Wednesday after he opened fire at the outpost without warning, wounding two civilians and a colleague.
A police complaint filed under OB 10/25/10/2023 states that the attacker, police constable Edward Otieno, came at the station to report for duty when the incident started.
He started firing at the station around 12:45 p.m. using a G3 rifle that had one magazine in it.He shot Zacharia Chelagat in the stomach, Winnie Cherop in the buttocks, and Officer Wycliffe Otieno in the left upper arm during the encounter.
The victims were reportedly shot in the body and suffered injuries. They were then taken to the hospital right away. “It was reported that one Pc Edward Otieno had started shooting indiscriminately using his G3 riffle s/no 193931 loaded with one magazine,” according to a portion of the police report.
“During the incident, he shot three civilians: Winnie Cherop, who had a suspected lodged bullet on her backside; Zachariah Chelagat, who was shot in the stomach; and Officer Wycliffe Otieno, who was shot in the left upper arm, also had a suspected lodged bullet. In fair condition, every casualty was taken to Marigat Sub-County Hospital by ambulance.”
The coworker was eventually restrained and disarmed by other station officials after he had been causing chaos for a while. The statement said that the cop had fired fifteen bullets before he was incapacitated. “It was determined that the aforementioned cop had fired fifteen bullets before being disarmed. He is currently being searched and held at a legal facility.”
