6 children escape remand
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) initiated a manhunt on Tuesday for six youngsters who escaped from legal custody in Malindi, Kilifi County. The six juveniles had been detained at Malindi Children’s Remand Centre when they escaped, according to a statement distributed to newsrooms by National Police Service Spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango.
According to the police investigation, the jailbreak occurred around midnight on Monday, when the minors were believed to be sleeping while awaiting trial at the Malindi Criminal Court.”Police officers from the station visited the scene and established that the juveniles broke the ceiling and roof from inside one of their dormitories and jumped over the fence,” the police statement said in part.
The six minors had been transported from various locations within Kilifi County and were scheduled to appear before the Malindi Magistrate Criminal Court.The first juvenile was taken from Vitengeni Police Station and accused with stock theft.
Meanwhile, the second minor was arrested at Malindi Police Station and accused with endangering the peace.The third youngster was brought to Malindi Children’s Remand Centre from Malindi Police Station and was scheduled to stand trial for causing serious harm. The fourth youngster was charged with robbery with violence and was transported from Malindi Police Station to the Malindi Children’s Remand Centre.Similarly, the fifth youngster was charged with stealing and had been brought from Kijipwa Police Station.
The last youngster had been transferred from Kilifi Police Station to the Malindi Children’s Remand Centre, where he was awaiting trial for burglary.”The escape occurred between midnight and half past midnight, while at the Malindi Children’s Remand Centre, which is under the Department of Children Services,” the statement stated in part.The police are asking members of the public to share any information that could lead to the arrest of the kids.
