Due to unsatisfactory negotiations on modifying the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) held in Kabete, Nairobi, teachers hired by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) would experience a delay in getting their August wages. The TSC will meet with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) once more in Naivasha the following week in an effort to reach an agreement on pay raises.
The August pay, which were anticipated to include the compensation increases recommended by the pay and Remuneration Commission (SRC), will be withheld by the Commission until the CBA negotiations are complete.
Some financial responsibilities, like as insurance payments and loans, have already been met by the TSC on behalf of the instructors. This situation means that teachers may not receive their August salary until the next Friday due to the protracted negotiating process.
The TSC also plans to release and publish revised pay and benefits for teachers in job groups B5 through D5. The SRC had earlier declared a wage rise of between 7 and 10%, however the Commission hopes to include this increment in the 2021 CBA with the teachers’ unions. The TSC’s initial compensation proposal, which ranged from 2.4% to 9.5%, had been rejected by the unions.
When President Ruto was looking for support for the Finance Bill 2023, which is now law, union representatives met with him at State House and first bargained the 7–10% raise. The compensation adjustments were intended to alleviate the nation’s economic problems, but the unions feel that the TSC’s current position is inadequate. The epidemic caused a delay in negotiations that were initially scheduled to take place in 2020. The unions agreed to a collective bargaining agreement in July 2021 without a financial clause in anticipation of a reassessment in a more favorable financial environment.
