A few days after Ksh31 billion in bursaries was disbursed, President William Ruto stated on Monday that the government has doubled capitation for bursaries. The president declared, while speaking in Uasin Gishu County, that Ksh12 billion will be made available by the government for education across the nation.
Ruto claims that the additional funding will strengthen the educational system and ensure that children transfer to junior secondary schools.”We want to make sure that our education system is appropriately grounded on a strong foundation upon which to build the process of Kenya,” he said.
President Ruto made his remark in response to requests made by Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition, for him to release the cash prior to the reopening of schools.Other opposition figures put pressure on Ruto to give the education sector first priority before starting new development initiatives.
“Our students are facing financial challenges, and bursaries play a crucial role in ensuring that they have access to quality education. We urge President William Ruto to intervene and expedite the release of NG-CDF funds so that we can allocate bursaries without further delay,” requested Trans Nzoia MP Kakai Bisau.Raila had accused Ruto of failing to increase the capitation for schools compared to his predecessors. He called upon members of parliament to push for the disbursement of the funds and improvement of the education sector.
Meanwhile, during the event Ruto promised to revamp his old primary school Kamagut in Uasin Gishu. The project is estimated to cost Ksh190 million with contributions from other sponsors. In the revamp, Ruto revealed that it will involve state-of-the-art classes and other facilities to benefit the students.
The administration also intends to promote and hire more teachers in an effort to enhance the school system.Ruto also pledged in 2022 to deliver on the economic change he had promised Kenyans throughout the campaign. In order to help regular unemployed Kenyans living in subpar housing and without access to quality healthcare, he pleaded with MPs to support his manifesto.”I would want to propose that we give the average Kenyan a chance. “I’ll do everything in my power to ensure that those without jobs find work and those without health insurance receive it,” he declared.
