In accordance with the instruction of Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened the application period for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses.
In accordance with the government’s commitment to the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework, the goal is to enroll 12,705 students.
In a circular dated October 5, 2023, Education CS Machogu emphasized that the government has established a complete legal and regulatory framework for TVET institutions nationwide, coupled with infrastructure improvements.
He stressed the need of adopting the new curriculum and pushed all TVET institutions to quickly embrace CBET.
The application process for TVET courses, initiated by KUCCPS on December 21, 2023, involves 190 TVET institutions declaring a total of 12,705 vacancies across various CBET programs for January 2024 admissions. The application portal is scheduled to close on January 2, 2024.
Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome, CEO of KUCCPS, emphasized that trainees can advance through different CBET levels based on experiential learning or skills acquired while working in the relevant industry. The assessment of students enrolling in CBET courses will be conducted by the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment, and Certification Council (CDACC).
Instead than focusing only on theoretical learning, CBET courses emphasize the ability to do specific tasks (competencies) through hands-on experience training. This action demonstrates a dedication to matching industry demands with educational programs and improving graduates’ employability in useful sectors.
