Gen Zs Offer Ruto 8 Solutions to Rebuild Trust

Following weeks of anti-government demonstrations, President William Ruto is gradually learning from Gen Zs themselves what steps he might take to win back the trust of the youth.

The Green Thinking Action Party (GTAP) young allies published a detailed accountability checklist on Monday, which they said the Gen Zs, the protest organizers, were hoping the state will follow.

Above and beyond expectations, the party’s youth, led by James Koech, 31, stated that they anticipated President William Ruto reorganizing his Cabinet.

For months now, the public accused some members of the Cabinet of either underperforming or engaging in corrupt dealings. They also complained that at 21 CSs, Ruto’s Cabinet was bloated and needed trimming, preferably to 15 heads.

The young leaders further advised the Head of State to revise controversial policies, implement advanced transparency mechanisms, and initiate genuine national dialogues.

GTAP also challenged the top office to strengthen judicial independence and institutional reforms, launch targeted economic reforms, establish public accountability initiatives, and promote cultural change within the government.

In the past week since shelving the Finance Bill 2024 in its entirety, however, President Ruto made efforts towards reaching out to Gen Zs and millennials but with mixed reception.

The President of State co-hosted an X Space on Friday, making history as the first African President to do so, although most of the guests expressed dissatisfaction.

Nevertheless, GTAP youth urged that the President host twice-yearly public accountability forums in each county and create an open internet platform for tracking government budgets and expenditures in real time.

Other major demands include a minimum 15% increase in funding for public healthcare and education, the start of a hiring spree for an extra 10,000 teachers and healthcare workers, and a 20% pay cut for high-earning public servants.

The national school food program should be reinstated, a commission to look into economic disparities should be established, and budget cuts totaling 30% less than current levels should be implemented by the government, according to Generation Z.

Ruto and parliamentarians affiliated with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have lost favor with the youth since the protests, which has forced some of them to apologize for approving the Finance Bill 2024, which many saw as punitive.
