Labor Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore’s demands on Monday for Kenyans to seek for jobs overseas in accordance with the current regime’s goal to obtain opportunities for Kenyans outside the nation infuriated a segment of the Kenyan population.
Speaking at a June 28 graduation, Bore urged college graduates to apply for the thousands of jobs offered by National Employment Authority Integrated Management (NEAIMS) and to take advantage of the government program.
“The government in its quest to source for employment opportunities and enhance protection of migrant workers, has actively pursued and negotiated Bilateral Labour Agreements with various countries thus opening avenues for Kenyans workers to seek employment abroad, particularly in sectors facing labour shortages,” she stated.
The CS emphasised that the online platform was created to ease the job searching process for Kenyans and reduce the rate of unemployment in the country.
Kenyans questioned how the government expected them to apply for housekeeping jobs through NEAIMS on social media.
There were also positions available for drivers, housemaids, housekeepers, corporate cleaners, babysitters, caregivers, kitchen stewards, and house service workers.
Additional employment opportunities include those for electronic technicians, audio and visual technicians, security guards, general cleaners, domestic workers, stateroom attendants, locksmiths, desk clerks, and plumbers.
Someone asked, “Wake up and see the foreign jobs this government is urging Kenyans to take up.”
Kenyans expressed dissatisfaction over the lower pay offered to interested persons who accept these positions in comparison to their international counterparts.
A section of this group of Kenyans called out the government for failing to negotiate for better pay and jobs.
Furthermore, Kenyans questioned how the government would agree with some of these countries especially after some Kenyans have faced assault and others have lost their lives in these foreign countries.
“I know guys who applied for more than 30 jobs on this website and have never received any communication from any of the agencies, let alone being offered any jobs they applied for,” another Kenyan commented.
A spot check on the government website indicated that a majority of the jobs advertised were related to housekeeping which featured more than 100,000 entries.
The platform also listed some white-collar jobs including receptionist, engineering technician, training coordinator, recreation specialist, SASMO Tactical Network, quality auditor, project coordinator, access control monitor, and nursing positions.
Besides Saudi Arabia, other countries offering jobs to Kenyans include; Turkey, Germany, the United States, Canada, Britain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, and Australia.
Some of the jobs advertised, especially housemaids have closing dates as late as December 31, 2030.
