Following a backlash from Kenyans, the Kenya Railways Corporation has responded to the widely shared images showing students sitting on the ground while others were standing on Sunday night.
The business said in a statement released on Monday, May 13, that following the government’s announcement regarding the reopening of schools for the second term, it had been inundated with requests for passenger trains.
Kenya Railways reports that the majority of the demand was observed on Sunday, May 12, and Monday, May 13, when students returned to class after a prolonged break necessitated by flooding.
The company emphasized that it was making every effort to guarantee that all passengers were taken care of and that all pupils reached their destinations without incident.
Furthermore, Kenya Railways explained that it had introduced additional coaches in both economy and first class to accommodate the students who had booked earlier before the postponement of the school opening dates.
“However, the demand over the last two days has been overwhelming,” read part of the statement.
Kenya Railways confirmed on April 29 that all student tickets purchased would be extended for use, following the government’s decision to delay the start of classes again.
According to the company, students can use the tickets between May 6 and May 10.
However, following the announcement that classes might resume today, several Kenyans expressed dissatisfaction about their children being compelled to spend hours sitting on the commuter train’s floor at night due to overbooked seats.
As per the reports making the rounds on the internet, the students were on Sunday’s 10 pm SGR train from Mombasa to Nairobi. Kenyans expressed their indignation, stating that the pupils were uncomfortable because of the distance.
“They ought to have prevented reservations in advance and held the seats for the kids who had made reservations but were unable to travel because of altered school hours. A commenter stated that the impacted pupils needed to receive substantial compensation.
The company was pushed to implement stronger safeguards to prevent this kind of situation in the future.
