MOE Lists Areas Where Schools May Not Open Immediately

Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for  education, stated on Thursday that due  to the heavy rains that have been observed  in certain areas of the nation, schools  may  not open in those areas.

Tana River, Homa Bay, and Kisumu counties are among those where schools might  not open alongside others, according to the CS.

Speaking on Thursday morning, Machogu affirmed that students in the affected  areas will be given consideration for alternative teaching methods and that the  impacted  schools will not reopen.

He was evaluating whether Nairobi’s Karen C Secondary School was prepared to  open for the second semester when he made this statement.

Machogu went on to say that 95% of the nation’s schools were prepared for pupils  to start their second term of instruction.

Furthermore, the CS announced that the ministry would shorten the August break in  order to allow enough time to finish the syllabus.

This comes after the nation was rocked by torrential rains, which caused the school  opening dates to be pushed back from May 6 to May 13.

It is anticipated that the Ministry of Education will release a directive identifying the  particular schools and regions that are subject to the most recent directive.

More than 1,900 schools nationwide have  been impacted by the flooding situation,  with some of them submerged, according  to a quick count of those affected.

The Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, Ndindi Nyoro,  announced that the Parliament would not impose a spending cap on flood  mitigation measures in order to repair schools and prepare the nation for the start  of classes.

“When issues of how much you have spent come to Parliament, I want to assure all  the government institutions we are going to approve all expenditures,” he stated.

Prior to this, the government had asked for Ksh10.6 billion to combat the unrelenting flood that was causing havoc throughout the country.
