List of 33 counties to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall
Acting on the Kenya Meteorological Department’s advice, the Ministry of Interior has identified 33 counties in Kenya that are anticipated to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms this Saturday. The capital city of Nairobi is one of the places where there will be a lot of rain.
Counties like Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, and Nyandarua in the Central region are anticipated to be impacted. Similar to this, there will be a lot of rain in the Rift Valley in Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Samburu, Turkana, Uasin Gishu, Laikipia, and Narok.
Heavy rainfall is also predicted for counties in Western Kenya, namely Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, and Trans Nzoia. Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, and Homa Bay in the Lake Victoria Basin will be impacted.
The Eastern region counties of Machakos, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, and Marsabit are also expected to experience heavy rainfall. The ministry has warned of potential flooding in low-lying, riparian, and urban areas, with the risk of landslides/mudslides in areas with steep slopes, escarpments, and ravines.
Despite generally dry conditions forecasted for most parts of North Eastern and South Eastern regions, continuous heavy rains in the Central region and overflow from the Seven Forks Dams may lead to flooding in the Tana Delta, affecting Garissa, Tana River, and Lamu Counties.
Furthermore, Tropical Cyclone Hidaya is anticipated to bring strong winds and large ocean waves, mainly affecting Kwale and Kilifi. Heavy rainfall is predicted to start on Sunday, May 5, even though the Coast region may see sunny spells.
