Teachers and lawmakers have received assurances from Treasury  Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u that the government is moving forward with  paying off the arrears  owing to over 11,000 retired teachers who have not received their  pensions in 27  years.

The government put aside Ksh16 billion in May to address these unpaid pension  claims that date back to 1997, but this sum was not enough to pay for all claims.

Since 1997, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has sent the National Treasury  23,267 updated claims, 22,317 of which are currently being processed. According to the Treasury Cabinet Secretary, the timetable for paying the  outstanding sums would be determined by the resources that are available.

Given that some retired teachers have already died away, the dispute over pension  payments is currently a heated matter that is being litigated. Due to the government’s failure to pay these retirees’ pensions on time,  some of them are currently living in abject poverty.

It should be noted that due to compensation increases they received as part of the  1997 wage adjustment, which was meant to be paid in five phases and end in 2001,  teachers who retired after July 2003 are not eligible for these pension benefits.

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Secretary-General Akelo Misori has urged lawmakers to put pressure on the Treasury to  guarantee the prompt payment of these unpaid pension claims.
