In an effort to alleviate the teacher shortage, TSC will provide 6,000 teachers with posting letters so they can be assigned to Special Needs Education (SNE) centers.

Teachers who were first employed by SNE before relocating to the current regular schools, where career advancement is practically a given, are among those who will be deployed.

Following a meeting between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (Kusnet), the aforementioned deployment decision was made.

The two organizations reached an agreement that SNE-trained teachers would now return to their high-population special needs schools.

The plan, in the opinion of Mr. Peter Sitienei, Chairman of Kusnet, is expected to raise standards in special needs institutions.

According to Sitienei, there are currently 300 elementary schools and 38 secondary schools that accommodate students with disabilities and special needs.

Sitienei went on to say that in order to focus on students with alternative needs, a number of teachers in special units in regular schools will now be completely detached from their teaching duties and assigned full responsibility.

In order to receive posting letters for redeployment to SNE schools, the chair of Kusnet encouraged all TSC teachers working in regular schools across the nation to apply.

The employer of teachers also decided to create a SNE section at main headquarters, manned by staff members with expertise in SNE issues.

The two came to the conclusion that if this plan is carried out, special education classrooms will have better instruction because more funding will be provided by the National Assembly Education Committee for SNE.
