32 children have disappeared without a trace over the past three months, leaving families in distress and communities on edge. This has left parents in Langas Estate, Eldoret, feeling a wave of pain and worry.Witney Awour, the mother of Eunice Akinyi, a distraught woman whose daughter vanished on March 3, 2024, described the terrifying circumstances that preceded her daughter’s disappearance.

Akinyi said that Witney was playing with several other kids close to their estate gate in the Kambi Nyoka neighborhood when a strange woman came over. The guy pretended to be looking for directions to Eldoret town in order to entice Witney away with the promise of sweets.

Neither Witney nor the enigmatic woman have been seen since that time.Josephine Ongachi, a different mom, talked about the terrifying incident of her daughter Elizabeth going missing overnight. Elizabeth was assigned to pick up food from a local store, and she came back on time. But Elizabeth wasn’t there when Ongachi later called for her daughter.

Jaspher Achieng, whose daughter Joyline Imali has been missing for three months, expressed her frustration with the lack of progress in locating her child. Achieng revealed the emotional toll the ordeal has taken on her family, with her husband unable to work and her other children struggling in school.

She lamented the dismissive attitude she encountered when seeking help from the authorities, including an alarming instance of alleged sexual harassment from a police officer to whom she had turned for assistance.

There is suffering outside of Eldoret, as evidenced by a recent event in Nakuru County. After a maid abducted her 20-month-old child, Caroline Kipnaigei narrated the heart-wrenching moments she had upon realizing her child and the maid were gone. They were discovered miles away despite search efforts, raising more concerns about the circumstances behind their disappearance.

Residents are concerned for their loved ones’ safety due to the worrying pattern of child disappearances. Josephine Mwihaki, Esther Mwihaki’s grandmother, described the terrifying moment her granddaughter disappeared without a trace, leaving the family feeling hopeless and uncertain.

The disturbing frequency of child abductions has been acknowledged by the authorities; 18 children disappear every day, or an estimated 6,000 children are reported missing each year.

Legal provisions like Section 174 (1) (b) of the penal code, which classifies child stealing as a felony punishable by up to seven years in jail, highlight the seriousness of such offenses.
