Azimio Warns US Over Supporting Haiti Deployment
On Tuesday, January 30, the Azimio Coalition issued a warning to the US not to get involved in Kenya’s domestic affairs. The coalition specifically accused the US of allegedly being involved in the Kenya Kwanza administration’s decision to send police officers to Haiti in a statement delivered by Martha Karua, leader of the NARC-Kenya Party.
The US and other foreign countries should acknowledge that Kenya is a sovereign state that should be allowed to function freely and make its own decisions, according to Karua.”We acknowledge the backing provided by the United States government for the Ruto administration to file an appeal against the decision regarding the police deployment to Haiti,” said Karua.
“We hope that all parties will uphold the judiciary’s independence and that foreign interests will refrain from meddling in our domestic affairs.”In its statement, Azimio also stated that it would steadfastly uphold the rule of law and the necessity of the judiciary’s independence.
Days earlier, the Executive had criticized Kenyan courts for impeding the deployment of 1,000 police troops to the unstable country in the Caribbean. To be clear, the Council is not required by Article 240 to send police officers outside of Kenya. Judge Justice Mwita of the High Court decided that deployment should only take place to countries that reciprocate, as specified in section 14 of the Act.
The National Security Council and President William Ruto were found to be lacking the constitutional authority to send police forces outside of Kenyan boundaries by the High Court. Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura responded to the decision by saying that the High Court erred in holding that Kenya had previously sent troops abroad.
Karua added in the statement that Azimio would keep pushing for a reduction in the cost of living. According to Karua, the Housing Levy and other levies imposed by Ruto’s government had overwhelmed Kenyans.
