Kenyan universities dominated the list of the top 100 academic institutions in the East Africa Community (EAC) in 2024, as determined by Edurank. Kenya boasts seven colleges in the Top 100 Africa list, according to Edurank, an independent metrics-based ranking of 14,131 universities from 183 nations worldwide.
At the same time, Tanzania had 3 universities on the list with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) tying at 2. No other EAC member state had any of its academic institutions appear in the top 100 African universities.
The University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Strathmore University, Moi University, Mount Kenya University, and Egerton University are among the Kenyan academic institutions that reached the list of the top 100.
University of Nairobi was placed 824th in the world and eighth in Africa. It was noteworthy since it was the only university in Kenya to be listed among the top 2,000 in the world.
Kenyatta University came in at number 38 in Africa and 2,232 globally, while JKUAT came in at number 53 in the continent and 2,702 worldwide. Strathmore University (68), Moi University (73), Mount Kenya University (81), and Egerton University (83), among other universities, were included in the top 100 list.
The University of Dar es Salaam (ranked 25), Sokoine University of Agriculture (ranked 49), and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (ranked 94) are the Tanzanian universities that made the top 100 list.
Makerere University ranked seventh continentally and first in the EAC, despite Uganda having just two universities in the top 100.
The century-old institution with its headquarters in Kampala was ranked 819th in the world with a 50% acceptance rate.
Uganda’s Mbarara University of Science and Technology was placed 3,363rd overall and 95th in Africa. The University of Kinshasa (54) and the University of Lubumbashi (89) are two of the DRC’s top 100 universities, despite the country’s protracted civil wars.
According to Edurank, “the ranking was based on research outputs, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence.”
