Govt to Introduce Stop Arms & CCTV For All School Buses
According to Kipchumba Murkomen, cabinet secretary for transportation, the government has completed writing a policy that will regulate the usage of school buses throughout the nation.
Murkomen said in a statement dated Tuesday, March 19, that the policy permits the installation of stop arms on school buses, as is customary in other nations including the United States of America.
To further improve child safety, school buses will also need to have attendants. The attendants will work on vehicles that transport elementary and preschool-aged students. He also mentioned that in order to protect student safety, school buses will need to have CCTV installed.
The CS also mentioned that every school car will have tracking technology installed in order to monitor traffic patterns. According to Murkomen, the requirements for the devices are being finalized by the Kenya Bureau of requirements (KEBS).
“We have completed the School Transport Rules, which are designed to improve safety and better regulate the movement of our kids.”These regulations contain the provisions that will Make it mandatory for those building school buses to include material and technology that will protect passengers in case of accidents,” the statement began.
Along with the decree, Murkomen unveiled fresh initiatives to reduce the nation’s escalating accident rate.He mentioned that one of the things that would be done was to make medical examinations for drivers nationwide mandatory. Retesting for all Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers and conductors will also be restarted.
“All unroadworthy cars and those not connected to the intelligent road safety management system for the transfer of speed limiter data will be impounded by the National Police Service and NTSA as part of an intensified statewide enforcement campaign.”
“In conclusion, as we approach the Easter festivities and closing of schools, we shall be working closely with the NPS and monitoring the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations,” the Chief of Staff stated.
Murkomen issued the orders in response to more than ten accidents over the course of the weekend, several of which included students.
