Three weeks after it was placed under temporary closure due to student unrest, Maasai Mara University has reopened. The pupils were told to return to school in a document dated March 13; the memo indicated that different cohorts would have varied reporting dates.

Part of the memo, signed by the Registrar of Academic Affairs, said, “This is to inform you that Senate during the meeting held on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, resolved that the University be reopened.”

However, before the students could be admitted, the Registrar gave them three ultimatums, one of which required them to pay an obligatory Ksh1,000 fine for damages they had caused during the rioting.

In addition, the pupils have to sign a bonding form that can be found on the school website and pay off all outstanding school payments. The message requests that all payments be made via the Jiunge App by the deadline for reporting.

“If a student does not meet the aforementioned reopening conditions, they will not be permitted to enter the school premises.”

On Sunday, March 17, 2024, all first-, second-, and fourth-year students are expected to report back. On Monday, March 18, 2024, lectures will start. All of the students enrolled in diploma and certificate programs as well as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program are part of the cohort.

A portion of the memo stated, “All third-year students, with the exception of those pursuing nursing, are required to report back on Friday, April 26 and resume lectures on Monday, April 29, 2024.”

In February, the students went on strike, accusing the management of the university of meddling in the student elections. The students claimed that rather than the leaders they had elected, the administration was imposing leaders who were friendly to them. The fifth union elections were postponed by the university’s Election Appeals Committee, which sparked rioting.
