Frustration as KUCCPS portal collapses
Following the breakdown of the Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) site, students looking for placement in postsecondary institutions have expressed their anger.A number of students informed The Standard that they haven’t been able to check on the status of their applications or use the system for several days. They asserted that the system has thwarted their attempts to get ready to enroll in universities.
Tens of young people from the Mount Kenya area who had set up camp in a few cybercafés in Murang’a town stated the system had not responded.Mercy Mueni, a resident of Kamahuha, voiced worry after her application appeared to be pending, dashed her aspirations of enrolling in a nursing program. It appears that the administration was unprepared to deal with the volume of applications. After a great deal of resources were wasted via the site, the system was restored on Saturday by the grace of God, according to Mueni.
The youths were camped out in the premises waiting for the portal to be restored, and John Chege, the operator of a cyber cafe, described the scenario as discouraging for them.Chege claimed that after the site became unavailable, several people who had computers at home contacted them for assistance, only to find out that the issue was widespread.
“The situation improved on Saturday afternoon, and was able to serve all those who were in the queue,” said Chege.Samuel Mburu, a cyber-attendant at Nyeri town, said that the system is not working.
“I have a list of clients who want the services, but anytime I try to log in the page displays that it is “out of reach,” Mburu said.Rueben Macharia, another cyber attendant, experienced the same problem.Gerald Maina from Nyeri, who is set to join Meru National Polytechnic, said since the portal was opened, he had not completed registration.
Several applicants in Kitale were in a panic since they knew they only had 12 days to select the courses and institutions of their choice.Students informed The Standard that the KUCCPS portal has not been accessible since it debuted last Thursday.
Those interviewed complained that they have made frantic efforts to log in but the portal is down.“Since Thursday last week, I have been trying day and night to log in to no avail,” said George Bush Obare, who wants to pursue a course in Medicine. In Nyanza, some parents urged the government to consider extending the application deadline.
In Homa Bay and Siaya towns, some students were made to wait for extended periods of time in computer cafés.The inability of the system to let the pupils submit their credentials was the source of their complaints.Billy Ochienge remarked, “I have been here for five hours, but I have not succeeded because the portal has technical issues.”Homa Bay town’s Fred Onyango, a cyber operator, lamented losing clients as a result of the glitch.
