Possible Ruto & Raila Handshake
On Sunday, February 4, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi made a suggestion that President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga would soon collaborate. During his speech in Kakamega County, Musalia, who also serves as the CS for Foreign Affairs, mentioned that the President had dispatched him on a special assignment to Bondo, which is Raila’s backyard, last week.
He warned followers of Kenya Kwanza who had gathered at Kakamega’s Approved School Grounds not to be shocked if Bondo’s political climate changed. “I spoke with my counterpart in the Foreign Affairs docket last week while I was in China. I was assigned a unique task to Bondo as soon as I landed in Kenya,” he clarified.
Additionally, Musalia remarked that were it not for international obligations, the Head of State would have gone to Bondo in Siaya County for a political charm offensive, which he claimed would have resulted in political realignments.“The President was heading to Italy and he tasked me with representing him in Bondo. I told the people of Bondo to embrace Ruto’s government since they never know what will happen,” he explained.
Governor Kenneth Lusaka of Bungoma accompanied Musalia on his visit to Bondo. On January 28, Musalia informed the people of Bondo that they may anticipate hearing positive news from Kenya’s highest governmental authorities. Musalia then said, “Mark this date and the place where I have said this,” making it clear that he would not get farther into the matter. As of right now, Ruto and Raila have not made a public declaration about whether or not Kenya Kwanza and Azimio would collaborate.
The two leaders have not committed to one another, but Azimio has called for protests this year and has been against most of the government’s initiatives.Meanwhile, discussions about important matters impacting the nation have been held between the government and the opposition. Parliament will begin debating the suggestions of the dialogue committee, which was chaired by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Azimio Principal Kalonzo Musyoka, in February 2024.
