Ruto Issues Fresh Directive to All Teachers

As soon as schools resume, President William Ruto has ordered all teachers to stop requesting money from parents for their children’s education.Speaking on Sunday at a roadside rally in Busia County, the Head of State declared that Ksh62 billion had already been granted by his government, which is sufficient to fund education for all levels.

“I want to say this for the avoidance of any doubt. We have released, in the last one month, Ksh62 billion. Money for primary school, Junior Secondary School, TVETs and universities. We have released Ksh10 billion for bursaries for all our needy students,” he told the crowd.

“I want to ask as a directive, no education official of any place shall demand for fees from any parent. The government has made its commitment, we have given enough money to make sure that all our children go to school and they learn. Therefore, there will be no requirement by parents for them to pay any extra fees.”

He contended that some principals were requesting that parents pay school fees on the grounds that their accounts did not yet reflect capitation.”The reason I say that is because sly individuals continue to beg money from parents. As the government, we have released JSS funds, including those for TVETs, universities, and elementary and secondary schools,” he continued.

The order was issued one week after parents expressed dissatisfaction over an increase in the price of school items, such as bedding and stationery. There were rumors that certain schools had teamed up with particular stores, telling parents where to get school supplies. The government declared on January 3rd that Ksh31 billion had been given for basic and secondary education.Of the total, Ksh4.74 billion were given to the State Department of Basic Education to support the provision of free elementary education for Term 1.
