Ruto Orders Evictions From Grabbed Land

In Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, President William Ruto has issued an order for the eviction of those who have taken land owned by Kenya Prisons.Speaking on Wednesday during a visit to Trans Nzoia County, Ruto said that the people were presently residing on land where the prison is supposed to be relocated.

The head of state stated that the government needed to move because it intended to grow the town and invite investors to establish businesses there. He lamented the fact that the administration was unable to carry out the relocation because to land grabbers.

Therefore, Ruto also directed the prison officials to work in conjunction with the Ministry of Lands to regularise the land ownership.

“Where I want to relocate this prison has been grabbed and turned into private land. I am issuing a notice that all those who have grabbed the prison’s land should pack their things and leave. It is as simple as that.

“We wish to avoid issues. That is territory owned by the government. We are honorable people, and I would want to advise them to go to the Ministry of Lands and turn those properties back into jails. Here, we wish to establish a city. Thus, we would like to inform them, mambo yao ni matatu,” he said.

The Head of State did not, however, identify individuals who took part in the snatching. The President withheld information on the land’s true worth and dimensions.Following concerns expressed by local authorities, such as the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), over the widespread land grabs in the county by wealthy individuals, Ruto made his statements.

George Natembeya, the area governor, asked Ruto to grant the locals access to land owned by Kenya Railways that was not being used.”My votes were impacted when I was told to evict people from Kenya Railways land while serving as the Regional Commissioner. But now that the area has been cleared, I can see that folks are only using it to dry their beans and corn. I ask that you make that land available to us so that individuals can conduct business there,” he said.
