15 Dead as Bus Collides With Matatu
This morning, Tuesday, January 9, a bus and a matatu crashed on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, resulting in the deaths of fifteen persons. According to the National Police Service (NPS), the accident happened in the Twin Bridge area at around 2:45 in the morning.
The police claim that the North Ways Shuttle Sacco is in charge of the matatu and that the bus belonged to the Classics Kings of Congo.Police from the Mau Summit Police Station were called to the incident as soon as possible to seal off the area and make sure no further accidents happened there.
Police also attended to other victims, but were yet to reveal the total number of those who were injured. “The injured were rushed to Molo Sub-County Hospital,” NPS stated in a statement issued today morning.
It was unclear, though, if an increase in the death toll was anticipated. The NPS withheld information regarding the reason behind the early-morning mishap as well as whether or not inquiries into the devastation had begun. Nevertheless, images released by the police showed the bus with significant front-end damage, its windshield and lights covered. The fact that its front tires were missing further suggested that there was debris strewn over the road, endangering other drivers. On the other hand, the matatu was distorted since the force of the accident caused the vehicle to buckle.
“The National Police Service is appealing to all motorists to exercise extreme caution on our roads to prevent road crashes,” NPS cautioned motorists to observe traffic laws.
Less than 19 hours had passed since three people lost their lives in a road accident involving a matatu and a lorry at Kisaju on the Isinya/Kitengela route. As to the police report, the collision happened approximately at 6:40 am.”According to the results of the Isinya Police Station’s preliminary investigations, the matatu driver tried to pass the halted truck but lost control, striking the truck on its back right.
Two adult male and female passengers who were not identified perished instantly from the hit, while other passengers were taken to different hospitals by kind individuals. The deceased’s bodies were taken to the mortuary at Shalom Hospital, according to the NPS. The number of fatalities from traffic accidents between January 1 and December 20, 2023, according to statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), was 4,139, as opposed to 4,517 during the same period in 2022.
