In an effort to promote secondary education accessibility throughout the nation, the government has started the selection process for the Elimu Scholarship program, which is aimed at individuals who obtained their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education last year.

Speaking in Athi-River during the launch of the exercise, Elijah Mungai, who is a Director in charge of Projects Coordination and Delivery at the Ministry of Education, said the selection process is underway in all 47 counties and 15 urban informal settlements nationwide and will benefit 9,000 needy learners.

“This is being implemented throughout the entire nation, focusing on every sub-county and aiming to reach the most susceptible kids through the community-based selection approach, in which the communities themselves sit down and determine which kids are in need,” Mungai stated.

While the cut-off marks for eligibility are set at 280, Mungai emphasized the government’s primary consideration is for marginalized and special needs learners. The scholarships are set to cover various aspects, including fee payments, personal effects, transportation to and from school, as well as mentorship and monitoring processes for the learners.

We are eager to examine students who may have specific requirements. We’re going to cut down a little for those people,” Mungai added.Athi-River Sub-County Senior Assistant County Commissioner Micah Andoro reported that the Community Selection Advisory Committee will choose 41 submissions from a total of 297 submitted by her office.

85 of the 297 applications that we received were shortlisted. Andoro stated, “We want to select 41 out of this, with 23 girls and 18 boys.”Only worthy candidates will be given the opportunity, thanks to the Community Selection Advisory Committee’s intelligence analysis and in-person visits.
