Kindiki Declares Curfew in Parts of Meru, Isiolo and Marsabit
A decree issued by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki expands the scope of the Maliza Uhalifu Operation curfew to include three additional counties.
A portion of Meru, Isiolo, and Marsabit Counties would be under curfew throughout the operation, which started on February 14, 2023.
“To effectively degrade bandit networks, the ongoing Maliza Uhalifu Operation is being extended into parts of Meru, Isiolo and Marsabit Counties,” the statement reads.
Speaking during a meeting with security teams from Rift Valley and Eastern Regions and Formation Field Commanders at Archer’s Post, Samburu County on Thursday, December 28, the CS indicated that the curfew aims to flush out bandits terrorising residents in the specified areas.
“Curfews and emergency measures will soon be implemented in new areas in the Northern Grazing Area in Meru North, parts of Isiolo and Marsabit Counties, and banditry hotspots in Samburu County to aid in the removal of bandits and the recovery of stolen livestock,” the statement said.
The families of the soldiers and the victims of banditry were also sympathized with by the CS.
“The families whose loved ones have suffered, as well as our frontline officers who have selflessly lost their lives while performing their duties, are acknowledged and supported by the Government,” he continued.
Kindiki added that the government’s priorities were putting an end to banditry and enhancing the resiliency of impacted areas. “When the Operation enters its third phase, more areas will be gazetted as ‘Disturbed and Dangerous’.” In order to reduce crime along the Moyale-Isiolo-Nairobi Highway, the government would further bolster the checkpoint at Archer’s post in coordination with the security services.
Had to assess the Archer’s Post Multi-Agency vehicle checkpoint’s operations, which Kindiki said are vital to the battle against the movement of drugs and psychotropic substances, illegal guns, and people trafficking.
During Boxing Day celebrations with Baringo County authorities, the Interior Ministry Boss declared that the government has cut banditry instances by 70%.
“We have covered at least 70% in this war and the remaining 30% in a few parts of Samburu East, Samburu West, Isiolo County, and Turkana County, we are closing in on the criminals,” Kindiki said.
