Govt Has Released Sh.3.9B University Scholarship
On Saturday, Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, stated that the Ministry had awarded KSh3.9 billion as the first tranche of financing for scholarships intended for first-year government-sponsored students at public universities under the New Higher Education financing Model.
Machogu specified that the scholarship recipients are those who successfully submitted their applications through the Higher Education Financing portal, which was launched on August 31, 2023.
Channel 1 reported, “A total of 115,892 First Year students had successfully applied for scholarships by November 29, 2023. The Universities Fund will distribute the Sh3.9 Billion directly to individual universities, covering tuition fees based on the student’s individual need under the New Funding Model.”
By December 4, 2023, the Minister guaranteed that each university would get its allotted share of student scholarships. “The amount of money the Government has so far released to first-year students under the New Higher Education Funding Model, launched by His Excellency President William Ruto on May 31, 2023, has reached Ksh9.2 billion with the release of the scholarship amount,” he said.
Earlier this month, the Government, through the Higher Education Loans Board, allocated Ksh5.3 Billion for loans to first-year students. The Ministry emphasized that funds were allocated using the Means Testing Instrument (MTI), a reliable scientific method, to determine students’ financial needs and ensure adequate support.
Students in their first year who took the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examination in 2022 would be the first group to benefit from the new model. The Ministry reaffirmed the Government’s steadfast dedication to encouraging university enrollment and offering financial aid to all worthy students, guaranteeing inclusion.
