Ababu Namwamba, the cabinet secretary for sports, gave Ksh9 million to charity on Saturday after winning a slander lawsuit against Standard Media Group. The CS disclosed in a statement that the funds would be given to the less fortunate as a Christmas present. The Ababu Namwamba Foundation (ANF) board of trustees will accept the funds in honor of the organization’s 20th anniversary.

According to the Nawamba, ANF will use the funds to cater for fees for vulnerable students and empower transformative youth projects.

Namwamba further urged journalists to avoid publishing false information that may damage the reputation of innocent individuals.”May the Ksh9 million awarded to me as damages serve as yet another stark lesson to journalists and the media to maintain fidelity to the straight and narrow of responsible reporting anchored on facts and not actuated by malice or recklessness,” the CS stated. He however complained that despite the lumpsum, no amount of money can undo the damages and pain caused to himself and his family.

The CS further disclosed that, if it weren’t for his positive rapport with the President, the story might have also resulted in his termination from his position.
