Politicians Who Went From Grace to Grass After Losing Elections
Following the general elections of 2022, a number of well-known politicians discovered themselves on an unexpected path, moving from the highest echelons of political power to a more subdued, private life.Since most Kenyan politicians are used to being in the spotlight, when they are humbled, they tend to hide away and work on a plan of retaliation so they can win back seats in the following elections.
We take a look at some of the most prominent personalities who were trounced in the 2022 polls.
Millicent Omanga
After losing to Esther Passaris, the incumbent Nairobi Women Representative, Millicent Omanga, the candidate for the position, was noticeably absent from the political spotlight. Even though Omanga is on President William Ruto’s list of candidates for the Cabinet Administrative Secretary (CAS) post, his political career has taken a less noticeable turn.
Evans Kidero
Evans Kidero, the former governor of Nairobi, saw a dramatic metamorphosis following his defeat by Gladys Wanga in the Homa Bay governor’s race. After his lost election appeal, Kidero—who was once a major political figure—moved away from the political scene and is now regarded as a political analyst.Additionally, he was assigned to President William Ruto’s administration as the Chief Administrative Secretary.
Sospeter Ojaamong’
After independent candidate Geoffrey Omuse defeated Sospeter Ojaamong, the former governor of Busia, in the race for Teso South Member of Parliament, Sospeter’s fortunes changed. After graciously accepting loss, Ojaamong’ has remained quiet and avoided being heavily involved in political debate.
Naomi Shaban
Naomi Shaban, with a two-decade tenure as the Taveta MP, faced defeat in the 2022 polls against Wiper Party’s Bwire Okano.
Despite making sporadic appearances in political forums, Shaban has opted for a more subdued role in the current political landscape.
Wambugu Ngunjiri
Wambugu Ngunjiri, who lost his Nyeri Town MP seat in the 2022 elections has gone from being one of the most vocal politicians to becoming a political commentator.
While actively sharing his insights on social media, Ngunjiri remains tight-lipped about his future political endeavors, leaving his next move shrouded in uncertainty.
Amos Kimunya
In 2022, former Finance Minister Amos Kimunya lost an election against UDA candidate Wanjiku Muhia. Kimunya then made the decision to withdraw from the political arena, which has left observers wondering if this is a momentary diversion from his political path or a more permanent one.
