MPs cautioned by KUPPET not to meddle in the hiring of teachers
Moses Nthurima, the national deputy secretary-general of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), expressed his concern during a teachers’ forum in Seme Sub County on the alleged intimidation and harassment of Teachers Service Commission (TSC) employees by politicians.
Nthurima brought out the fact that politicians had been involved in the hiring process, supporting their friends and family, which could put qualified instructors without such connections at a disadvantage.
He emphasized that teacher hiring should be governed by existing laws and fundamental values such as meritocracy, democracy, and the rule of law. Nthurima encouraged the political class to avoid meddling in the operations of the government.
In his remarks to the forum, James Nyikal, a member of parliament for the Seme constituency, said that the Ministry of Education had lately established new rules, some of which were in conflict with earlier ones.
He noted the developments in the educational field, such as the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and the complete transition of class 8 students into form 1.
Nyikal advised teachers to establish good ties with local representatives and enlist their help in resolving issues with school facilities.
MPs are forewarned by KUPPET against interfering with the hiring of teachers
