Five Arrested for assaulting woman representative
Five persons have been taken into custody by the police after an alleged assault on Kirinyaga Woman Representative Jane Njeri Maina on August 22 in Kirinyaga County. The five males were detained by officers stationed at the Kerugoya Police Station on Wednesday, according to a charge sheet that was received on Thursday.
The five were held at the police before being brought before Principal Magistrate Cheruto Kipkorir at the Kerugoya Law Courts on Thursday morning. The five were accused of causing great bodily harm in violation of sections 231 and 234 of the penal code, according to the charge sheet.
“The five on the 22nd day of August, 2023 at around 1200hrs in Kirinyaga County, jointly with others not before the Court assaulted one Hon Jane Njeri Maina causing her grievous bodily harm,” according to the charge sheet. The cash bail amount for each of the five defendants was Ksh 50,000. The matter will be mentioned on November 2 at that time.
When Njeri was in Kirinyaga County for a meet-and-greet in Kerugoya, she was attacked. She was transported to Nairobi for medical treatment after the event, where she was hospitalized to a city hospital with brain injuries. The MP claimed that the attack was politically motivated and that some of the perpetrators belonged to Anne Waiguru’s camp, the area governor.
During a personal statement before Parliament, she said, “The events of that day shattered my idealistic view of politics and exposed the dark underbelly of power struggles and political rivalries in Kirinyaga County.”
“Notably, the planners and executors of this attack are well-known to me.” Waiguru, however, refuted the accusations and even sent the County MP a letter requesting that she retract her remarks. “According to our instructions, the aforementioned Facebook post you made is false, careless, and defamatory. The letter from Waiguru’s attorney stated that the aforementioned publication was also malicious and intended to damage the reputation of his client and damage her sterling image.
