18 students from Cardinal Otunga Girls High School in Bungoma County were recently expelled after it was allegedly discovered that they were in possession of cellphones and cucumbers. The disciplinary committee for the school claimed that these children were caught doing what the school deems to be a serious crime.

According to media reports, a disciplinary hearing was convened for these students on September 28.The school communicated the suspension to the students’ parents through a letter signed by the Principal, which stated, “Your daughter named above has been suspended from school for gross misconduct. You are required to appear before the school disciplinary committee on September 28 to show cause why your daughter should not be excluded from the institution.”

When the deputy headmistress spotted them and demanded an explanation for their “sleepover,” one of the girls said that she was sleeping in her bed and her friend was sleeping on top of the blankets. It’s important to note that four candidates who are due to take national examinations in the coming weeks are among the approximately 14 suspended students. Parents are in a difficult situation since they are unsure if their daughters will be allowed to take the national examinations because of this prolonged postponement.

One parent expressed their confusion and distress about the school’s decision, saying, “We are perplexed and disturbed.” Our students have experienced significant psychological torture as well as feelings of confusion and embarrassment. However, according to a letter from the school’s principal, the girls were allowed to take their final exams as long as they waited until the school gave its advice on the conditions for their return in October.
