A Kenyan teacher named Millicent Cassianes has been nominated for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2023 at BL Tezza Complex Primary School.Over 7,000 nominations and applications from more than 130 countries that were vying for the $1 million USD prize led to Millicent being shortlisted.

The Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize is run in collaboration with Dubai Cares, a global philanthropic organization located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).The Global Teacher Prize strives to highlight the significance of educators and the fact that their work should be recognized and honored globally, according to the Varkey Foundation website.

According to the website, the initiative “seeks to recognise the impact of the very finest teachers—not only on their students, but on the communities around them.Since she began working for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Millicent has worked with youngsters who have special needs.

After seeing several children in an orphanage with severe hearing loss and infections, she made the decision to receive hospital training on how to care for youngsters with unique needs.After enrolling in Kenyan Sign Language classes, Millicent began attending the BL Tezza Special School for the Deaf.With the help of the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya and other organizations, she was able to expand the school. She also obtained a bank loan to help with the building of the school.More than 120 hearing-impaired students attend the school, where classes from the competency-based curriculum are used.

The greatest award of its kind, the Global Teacher Prize, which is now in its eighth year, is available to teachers in compulsory schools who work with students between the ages of five and eighteen.Part-time teachers and instructors of online courses are also welcome to apply.The Global Teacher Prize was awarded to Kenyan teacher Peter Tabichi in 2019.
