Govt Issued Warning Letters to Chiefs Over Attending A Meeting
Following their attendance at a meeting held at the residence of Kisii Governor Simba Arati, local administration personnel in Kisii have received warning letters from higher ranking government officials.Philip Etale, the communications director for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), defended the opposition-affiliated Kisii governor on Monday even as he denounced the crime.
In a statement, he expressed his regret that the measure is illegal and that it causes a rift between the two branches of government. This is alarming since, according to Article 6(2) of the Constitution, county and national governments are interconnected. “Chiefs meeting the governor—Simba Arati—has turned into a crime,” regretted Etale.
Speaking with a reliable source verified that the chiefs had received the letters. It was said that the governor’s meeting focused on county development issues, such as the distribution of mosquito nets in large quantities and the awarding of bursaries.
The chiefs bemoaned receiving warning letters from high national government officials—names withheld—after the conference, though. The chiefs were reportedly forewarned in the letters that they had breached official procedures and norms by failing to report for duty as scheduled throughout the holiday season.
“This letter is to warn you of your actions and that severe consequences of not adhering to the directives will be imposed on you,” the letter purportedly stated.Which senior officials sent the letters and if the accusations made within are true have not yet been established.
The governor emphasized the importance of cooperation between the federal government and county governments at a prior meeting conducted at the Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KHIBIT).He also used the constitution as support for this cooperation in his speech, noting that all governmental levels are interconnected and must cooperate to carry out their diverse duties for the good of the Kenyan people.
