Verification of KCSE results is ongoing

The results of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) would be made public in the second week of January 2024, according to Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu. As schools get ready to welcome 1.4 million 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) students to secondary school, the results are anticipated between January 7 and January 13.

The 903,260 KCSE candidates of 2023 will experience a new grading system that focuses on two compulsory subjects—Mathematics and any language (English, Kiswahili, or National Sign Language). This departure from the previous mandatory five subjects aims to allow learners to explore and excel in subjects aligned with their strengths.

The grading structure, recommended by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, is designed to increase the number of students qualifying for post-secondary education. It reduces the number of compulsory subjects and emphasizes performance in specific areas.

Concerns were raised by the CS regarding the approximately 40% of candidates from the previous year who received D, D-, and E grades. The goal of the new system is to rectify the shortcomings of the old methodology, allowing students to take courses that play to their strengths.

Additionally, the CS highlighted the impact of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), offering three pathways for Senior School—Social Sciences, Arts and Sports, and Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

CS Machogu assured Kenyans that the KCSE results will be credible. The Ministry implemented new guidelines to minimize early exposure of exam papers, including remapping schools, increasing storage container accessibility, and allowing only secondary school teachers to invigilate, supervise, and examine tests.

Cheating was successfully reduced by the more stringent procedures, such as administering exams twice a day. The CS emphasized that examiners were paid on schedule and that the marking was completed correctly, expressing confidence in the fairness of the marking procedure. It is anticipated that the release will take place no later than the second week of February.
