To address the growing teacher shortage, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is launching a recruitment drive. The CEO of TSC, Dr. Nancy Macharia, has disclosed plans to hire 11,000 instructors as well as an extra 1,594 retired teachers who will be replaced once their two-year extension is complete. Dr. Macharia estimates that there are currently 114,581 teachers needed. About 6,000 of the new workers will work as interns, while the remaining 5,000 will have long-term, pensionable jobs.
Additionally, a budget of Sh1.2 billion has been allocated for the fiscal year 2023/2024 to recruit 20,000 interns as a temporary measure to address the shortage. Notably, many teachers who were due to retire in 2020 and 2021 were granted optional extensions to work under contract for up to two years during the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr. Macharia urged teachers to remain vigilant, even as the consequences of the pandemic continue to be a concern.
Dr. Macharia also stated that by the end of the prior month, 1,043 teachers and members of their families had been admitted to the hospital with serious Covid-19-related ailments. She also announced the start of the Competency-Based Curriculum teacher training for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers.
