Govt to Confirm all JSS Teachers Before Year Ends
Before the end of 2024, all Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers will be confirmed and placed under permanent and pensionable terms, according to President William Ruto’s assurances.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Kimuka Power Sub Station’s commissioning in Kajiado West, Kajiado County, the head of state said that the JSS teachers’ grievances will be taken into consideration despite the difficulties brought on by the Finance Bill’s withdrawal.
“I want to tell all our JSS teachers, despite all the challenges in the Finance Bill, we are going to make sure that we confirm all teachers under JSS before the end of this year so that they can teach knowing that as we agreed, they will serve under permanent and pensionable terms.”
The president of state’s promise is being given in the midst of intensely expressed worries and controversy on the predicament of JSS teachers under the new competency-based curriculum (CBC).
The Budget and Appropriations Committee directed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to appoint all Junior Secondary School teachers who had been employed under an internship program to permanent, pensionable positions in June as a result of the JSS strike.
The Budget and Appropriation Committee chairperson stated that the government had allocated enough funds for the project in the 2024/2025 Financial Year.
Nyoro, who doubles up as the Kiharu Member of Parliament, directed the TSC to hire all the 46,000 interns who have been working under the program.
“I can assure this house that there are now sufficient resources to confirm the JSS interns into permanent and pensionable terms.”
He exuded confidence over the hiring after the passing of the financial budget as opposed to in January 2025 as earlier proposed.
“From the floor of this house, I want to request the TSC as you appropriate this money kindly do not wait until January 2025 to confirm the interns, Please hasten their confirmation as soon as the budget is passed.”
In an effort to bring the education sector into alignment, the head of state has put on hold plans to appoint 20,000 more teachers until next year, adding to the 46,000 currently listed in the TSC register.
Afterwards, on June 1, 2024, they signed a return-to-work formula and decided to call off their strike.
The instructors were supposed to return to work as per the arrangement made on Madaraka Day. TSC withdrew all of the show-cause letters it had sent to teachers for taking part in the strike, as one of its concessions.
Some JSS teachers, however, refused to follow the agreed return-to-work formula, which stated that they would only come back if they were given permanent jobs with pension benefits.
