JSS Teachers’ Fate Regarding Confirmation Announced

It’s starting to look like the estimated budget cuts could be the last straw for the almost 46,000 JSS intern instructors who were hoping to be hired on a permanent basis and given pensions.

Some significant projects relating to education are expected to be put in jeopardy by the cut. For the current fiscal year, beginning in July of this year, the government has put aside Sh18 billion for the hire of intern teachers.

However, there are issues with the previously indicated strategy, which is presently resulting in further delays in the appointment of teaching interns.

Originally, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) planned to provide the interns full-time positions with pension benefits starting in January 2025.

However, following the several protests, the MPs pushed for their confirmation to happen sooner because some teachers had planned protests to call for better working conditions.

Hundreds of teachers may take to the streets again in protest, demanding the permanent employment they were promised, as a result of drastic budget cuts and the delays in employing these intern instructors.

This problem comes up during the second week of nationwide demonstrations against the government that are happening in American schools. Several schools that were scheduled to return on Monday and Tuesday had to open earlier due to the ongoing protests.

This is in response to the decision to move the midterm break to Wednesday. Most boarding schools released their students early in the wake of last week’s heightened protests over the Finance Bill 2024.

After that, schools in every major town that had held rallies on Tuesdays and Thursdays began asking children to stay at home.

This situation is likely to affect teaching and learning in many institutions since, as previous research has demonstrated, the term is increasing shorter every time.

It is therefore expected that the government will put in place a framework to facilitate JSS instructors’ employment.
