The Nairobi County Makadara Law Courts shooting of a magistrate just hours prior was denounced by the Judiciary on Thursday, June 13.

The Judiciary guaranteed all judicial officials of their safety while performing their duties and announced in a statement that it was improving security procedures for all citizens visiting courts nationwide.

The incident happened after the magistrate revoked the bond of a suspect whose case Winfrida Mokaya was supervising, according to additional information provided by the person who signed the paper in her capacity as the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary.

According to preliminary accounts, the suspect is the spouse of a police officer.

“During an open court session earlier today, the magistrate cancelled the bond and failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond. Immediately this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the magistrate and injured her on the hip,” read the statement.

Reiterating that the law enforcement agencies had started extensive investigations into the situation, Mokaya asked for calm.

The Judiciary further verified that other police officers shot the magistrate’s shooting officer right after the magistrate was shot.

Following the incident, which garnered national attention once word got out, the judiciary released a statement.

It was said that the principle magistrate was presiding over the court session when the senior police officer opened fire. It is reported that he shot her, seriously wounding her.

The event caused a disruption on Thursday, bringing all activity to a complete stop.

The magistrate, and another civilian injured during the incident were rushed to the hospital for specialised treatment.

Police who arrived at the court shortly after, moved the deceased’s body to the local morgue where it will be preserved before an autopsy is conducted.
