Kenya Signs Labour Migration Deal With Canada

On Saturday, June 1, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sign’Oei affirmed that the Kenyan government has inked many agreements with Canada.

He disclosed that this occurred following the conclusion of the Kenya-Canada Binational Commission, which he and Assistant Deputy Minister for Sub-Saharan Africa Global Affairs Cheryl Urban co-chaired.

The two nations reached an agreement on labor migration, wherein workers from Kenya will migrate to Canada and vice versa. It is anticipated that this action will boost remittances from the diaspora and decrease Kenyan unemployment.

The PS states that the two nations have decided to collaborate toward removing administrative and consular obstacles from the visa application procedure. Kenyans and those who are already in Canada will find it easier to migrate as a result.

“We also agreed on addressing constraints with the GOK (the Government of Kenya) service portal. I am deeply grateful for the spirit of partnership that guided our deliberation,” Sing’Oei stated.

Additionally, the two countries agreed on further cooperating in trade and investment. The PS did not delve into the details of this agreement. However, it is expected to boost the country’s economy and increase exports from past similar agreements,.

Another agreement signed is on peace and security, a sustainable blue economy, and a coordinated approach to multilateral challenges.

Meanwhile, Urban also emphasised that Kenya and Canada had accomplished major goals due to the strong relationship between the two countries.

“So much accomplished together. Thank you Kenya for the partnership and thank you Sing’Oei for your leadership,” she added.

Notably, Sing’Oei has been in Canada to wrap up the negotiations with a few Kenyan officials. May 30 and May 31 were the dates of the Kenya-Canada Binational Commission’s Third Session.

The Kenyan group met with a number of Canadian authorities while on the trip to talk about the two countries’ relationship and potential avenues for further development.

“Met with Canada’s Minister for International Development, Ahmed Hussen, today and expressed deep appreciation for Canada’s support for Kenya’s sustainable development including in the education, health, climate and blue economy sectors,” the Prime Minister said on May 30.

How to improve gender equality, strengthen climate resilience, and provide access to skills and vocational training for Kenya’s rapidly expanding population were among topics of debate.

The commitment of Canadian officials to deepening trade links with Kenya was emphasized. The foreign country is one of several that back Kenya’s peacekeeping effort in Haiti.
