Several Feared Dead After Storey Building Collapses

In the Bungoma County neighborhood of Kanduyi, a multi-story building collapsed, leaving multiple people missing.

Reports state that several people were trapped inside the rubble and that approximately five people died in the mid-morning incident.

The structure is said to have collapsed during the building’s demolition by the Bungoma County Government in order to make room for Masinde Muliro Stadium’s expansion.

The building was left in an unstable state after being partially demolished, which put the residents at serious risk.

Meanwhile, a rescue team was quickly dispatched to the scene even as residents watched the unfolding from afar.

In the widely circulated videos, the building could be spotted bent on one of its sides with the lower section completely destroyed.

When it collapsed, a group of young people from the area hurried over and started looking for metal scraps.

The incident happened just as preparations were being made for Masinde Muliro Stadium to host Madaraka Day celebrations this year.

Wycliffe Wangamati, the father of the former governor of Bungoma, recently accused the Bungoma County government of tearing down his Ksh 500 million building in order to make room for the Masinde Muliro stadium.

According to Wangamati’s father, he obtained the land legally and is requesting payment from the county government.

“This land was not obtained illegally by me. It was publicized. Wangamati’s father, the former governor, stated, “I applied and got it. I was running to a petrol station called Ajip petrol station.”

He continued, “Because I have operated in Webuye for a long time, if I am a land grabber, I could own enormous tracts of land there.”
