Senate Suspends Sittings Due to Power Blackout

A power outage on Thursday, May 9, forced the Senate to adjourn its sessions.

Senator Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi made this announcement, but he did not clarify if lawmakers would reassemble in the House if the blackout ended during regular business hours.

“We have had to suspend sittings of the Senate because there is no power in Parliament,” said Sifuna.

The Senators were forced to use their smartphone flashlights as soon as the power went out.

Select members of the National Assembly were also present at Parliament Buildings during the blackout, discussing an impeachment motion aimed at forcing Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi from her position.

Oddly enough, during the investigation into the CSs handling of the fake fertiliser case, opposition members did not chant “Linturi Must Go”.

Moments before they approved the motion to impeach the Agriculture Minister a week ago, members of the National Assembly uttered the chant.

The Senate did not use a backup generator following the power outage; this was not disclosed.

In addition to using electricity for general lighting, parliament also streams live proceedings in audio format.

If the power outage was a result of regular maintenance in the area, Kenya Power did not react right away.
